MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship in Immersive Virtual Worlds and Digital Twins
Introduction
The University of Camerino invites expressions of interest from postdoctoral researchers wishing to apply for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowships 2026 in the field of computer science, digital technologies, and interactive systems. This research opportunity is hosted by Dr. Fabrizio Fornari at the School of Science and Technology and focuses on the development of immersive virtual worlds and digital twin systems for collaborative digital ecosystems.
Supervisor
Dr. Fabrizio Fornari is Assistant Professor in Computer Science at the University of Camerino and a member of the PROS Lab – Processes and Services Laboratory. His research focuses on business process management, Internet of Things, digital twins, and model-driven engineering, with the aim of supporting the development and analysis of complex distributed systems. His work explores modelling techniques and software engineering approaches for IoT-enabled systems and digital ecosystems, and more recently has expanded toward virtual worlds and immersive environments.
He is actively involved in international research collaborations and participates in European and national initiatives related to digital transformation and virtual worlds technologies. He also coordinates the OMiLAB node at the University of Camerino, part of an international network dedicated to model-driven engineering and IoT, and contributes to research activities on digital twins and complex cyber-physical systems.
Research Group and Facilities
The research is carried out within the Computer Science section of the School of Science and Technology, in an environment that supports experimental activities in IoT systems, digital twins, and immersive technologies. The available facilities include the infrastructures of the PROS Lab and the UNICAM OMiLAB node, which provide resources for research, prototyping, and development of interactive systems.
The laboratories support experimentation in virtual reality and extended reality environments, IoT development, and robotics integration. The infrastructure includes tools for immersive applications, embedded systems, and prototyping activities, and is continuously evolving to support research on virtual worlds, digital twins, and interactive simulation environments. The research group operates within international networks, including the UPRAISE European consortium and the OMiLAB network, fostering collaboration with universities, research centres, and industry partners.
Research Topic and Project Idea
The project, entitled “Immersive Virtual Worlds and Digital Twins for Collaborative Digital Ecosystems”, focuses on the development of interactive digital environments that integrate virtual worlds and digital twin technologies. The research aims to explore how immersive technologies can support collaborative systems and the representation of complex physical or conceptual environments.
The project investigates the design of immersive virtual environments, the integration of digital twins with extended reality systems, and new interaction paradigms for human-centred virtual experiences. The research combines approaches from virtual reality, simulation, and digital ecosystems to develop frameworks for collaborative immersive environments applicable to areas such as research, education, and digital innovation platforms. The fellow will also have the opportunity to interact with European research and innovation ecosystems working on virtual worlds technologies.
Candidate Profile and Career Development
The position is suitable for candidates holding a PhD in computer science, human-computer interaction, virtual reality, or related fields, with experience in immersive technologies, digital environments, or interactive systems.
The fellowship will allow the candidate to develop competences in immersive systems, digital twin technologies, and collaborative virtual environments, while gaining experience in interdisciplinary research contexts and international research networks. The research experience will support the development of skills in digital innovation and participation in European research ecosystems.
